When a Cardinal rests

The details concerning the funeral liturgies for Aloysius Cardinal Ambrozic were posted this weekend on the website of the Archdiocese of Toronto.  Actually they were placed within the Archdiocesan blog, so they may not have been immediately visible to someone who visited the website.

Some preliminary details concerning the protocol for the funeral of a Cardinal were also posted on the Archdiocesan website.  They provide some interesting details about what will take place in the coming days.  It's not every day that we witness the death of a Cardinal, so it's not every day that we'll see these proceedings.  Some of the details are not that much different from the liturgy for the burial of a priest or a bishop (a Cardinal is, after all, both a priest and a bishop), but there are a few extra details that are particular to this circumstance.

Cardinal Ambrozic's body will arrive at Saint Michael's Cathedral tomorrow afternoon at 1:30pm.  At that time, the Rector of the Cathedral will conduct the Rite of Reception (similar to the Rite of Greeting the Body which is outlined in the Rites of Christian Burial).

Priests and members of the public will be allowed to view the Cardinal's body, and to pray for the repose of his soul during the period of Lying in State, which will take place tomorrow from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Cathedral.  At 8:30pm, the Office of the Dead (one of the prayers provided in the Liturgy of the Hours) will be celebrated.

The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday morning beginning at 10:30am.  It is expected that more than 500 priests, mostly from the Archdiocese, will be present.  The public is invited to attend, however, there are extensive renovations currently taking place at the Cathedral, and this will also limit the amount of space available for the public in the building during the liturgy.
