South Africa, 5

Down the garden path - January 21, 2013

Well fed and watered, we bid farewell to the Kuantu game reserve this morning, including a variety of different animals, some of which are on the endangered list and others which are still found in relative abundance.

The route of choice for today is known as the Garden Route, running along the coast of the Indian Ocean toward the southern tip of the continent.  The Cape area of South Africa is the smallest of four major foral kingdoms in the world, and as such there are countless species of plant life which are native to this part of the world, and many of them grow only here!

Along the Garden Route, there are some very luxurious homes, and there are also shanty towns; they seem to live side by side.  The seaside route is the summer haven for the rich and also home for the economically challenged, but then again it would seem that this is par for the course in a country and on a continent were contrasts are part of daily life.

Travelling west along the route, we made footfall today in the Tsitsikama National Park where those who were able walked to the suspension bridges before (or after) having lunch.  The views along the path were absolutely breathtaking!

A short hop down the road from the Tsitsikama National Park is Monkeyland, a walking and guided safari in a protected sanctuary which is home to a number of monkey breeds, some of which are sufficiently abundant in the African forests, and others which are not.  Monkeyland is also home to some monkeys who were once kept as household pets, but who have been abandoned by their original owners.

Finally, we arrived in the town of Knysna, where we bedded down for the night, but not before grabbing a swim in the pool which was round and encircled by all our rooms - a perfect setting for our group of travellers to socialize while not bothering other hotel guests too much.
