As soon as the bells began to peal in Saint Peter`s Square, an ever-growing number of people have been pouring in. Also, a number of military groups, including bands began to materialize, each playing their own tributes, songs and celebratory music.
At 2:55pm EST, the doors to the central balcony above the main entrance to Saint Peter`s Basilica in Rome were opened, and a procession led by the crucifix and others of the Papal Masters of Ceremonies. His Eminence, Jean-Louis Tauran, the senior Cardinal-deacon also appeared at this time to announce to the world:
With these time-honoured words, the news has been shared with the world, and we will soon hear from the newly-elected Holy Father, who is by now at prayer in the Pauline Chapel.
