Pope Francis sent his condolences to the victims of the tragic gas
tanker explosion that occurred yesterday in Ecatepec, Mexico.
The message was sent by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican Secretary of
State, on behalf of the Holy Father.
The accident occurred yesterday morning when a natural gas tanker truck lost control and hit a centre divider on a stretch of highway that was lined with homes. According to an Associated Press report, Governor. Eruviel Avila, from the State of Mexico was scheduled to meet with Pope Francis on Wednesday, but returned to Mexico upon hearing of the tragedy. As of now, 22 people were killed in the accident and at least a dozen were injured in the blast.

The Holy Father is saddened by the recently received news of a serious accident which occurred on the outskirts of the municipality of Ecatepec, which has claimed many victims and caused many injuries as well as extensive damage. He asks Your Excellency to kindly convey to all those affected by this trajedy, his spiritual closeness to them, and the assurance that he is offering prayers, asking God to grant eternal rest to those who lost their lives in this lamentable mishap.
Also, His Holiness, Pope Francis wishes to convey through Your Excellency, his condolences to the families of the deceased, and expressions of comfort and affection to all the wounded along with his fervent prayer for their speedy and total recovery.
With these sentiments, the Pope, while invoking the sweet name of Our Lady of Guadaloupe, sincerely imparts to everyone the comfort of his apostolic blessing as a sign of hope in the risen Christ.
