Letter of His Holiness, Pope Francis
to Doctor Ricardo Di Segni
Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Community in Rome

I wish to express my heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family members and to the entire Jewish community of the Capital on the occasion of the death of Rabbi Professor Elio Toaff, the long-distinguished spiritual leader of the Jewish community in Rome.

An enthusiast for Jewish history and for Italian civilization during the past decades, he was able to secure common esteem and appreciation for his moral authority and his profound humanity.

I remember with gratitude his generous commitment and sincere openness to the promotion of dialogue and of fraternal relations between Jews and Catholics, which I witnessed in a significant moment at his memorable encounter with Saint John Paul II at the Synagogue of Rome.

I offer my prayers to the Almighty, who is rich in love and fidelity, that he might welcome him into his Kingdom of peace.
