This morning, His Holiness, Pope Francis received in audience the Prime Minister of Canada, His Excellency, Mister Stephen Harper, who subsequently met with His Excellency, Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States.
During the cordial discussions, the good relations existing between the Holy See and Canada were noted, as was the positive spirit of cooperation and dialogue between the Canadian federal government and the Church. In particular, Canada’s commitment to defend and promote religious freedom in the context of fundamental human rights was treated.
Later in the conversation, international political issues were discussed, with reference to Europe and the Middle East and the prospects for peace in that region, as well as the fight against terrorism and environmental issues.
