This morning, at the Vatican Apostolic Palace, the Holy Father, Pope Francis received the President of the Republic of Chile, Her Excellency, Michelle Bachelet Jeria, who subsequently met with His Eminence, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Secretary of State, and with His Excellency, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Secretary for Relations with States.
During the cordial encounter, mention was made of the good bilateral relations which currently exist, and a hope was voiced that these relations might be strengthened through the framework of legal instruments according to international law. Some issues of common interest were then addressed, such as the protection of human life, education and peace in society. In such a context, emphasis was placed on the role played by and the positive contributions provided by Catholic institutions to Chilean society, especially in human development, education and assistance provided to those in need.
During the remainder of the meeting, an overview of the current situation in Latin America was also spoken of, especially referring to some challenges of interest to the continent.
