The Holy Father, Pope Francis has sent a telegram of condolence to the Dean of the College of Cardinals upon hearing of the death yesterday in Rome of His Eminence, Giovanni Cardinal Coppa.
To His Eminence, Angelo Cardinal Sodano
Dean of the College of Cardinals
Vatican City
The death of the dear Cardinal Giovanni Coppa, a native of the Diocese of Alba (Italy), evokes within my soul deep emotions and sincere admiration for an esteemed man of the Church who lived his long and fruitful priesthood and episcopacy faithfully in service to the gospel and to the Holy See.
I remember with gratitude his generous and competent work in service to six of my predecessors, who entrusted to him delicate and important tasks. Called first to the Apostolic Court, he then continued his mission in the Secretariat of State, where he worked as a Latinist during the work of the Second Vatican Council. As Assessor of the Secretariat of State and Delegate for the Apostolic Nunciatures, he demonstrated pastoral wisdom and paid thoughtful attention to the needs of others, going out to meet everyone with goodness and meekness. Sent as Papal Representative to he Nunciature in Prague, he bore witness to a particularly intense and fruitful commitment to the spiritual good of that nation.
I raise fervent prayers on his behalf, that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary and of Saint Ambrose, of whom he was a studious witness, the Lord may welcome his deceased servant into glory and eternal peace, and I send an Apostolic Blessing to you and to all those who share in your sorrow at the departure of this zealous pastor.
Franciscus

The Eucharistic liturgy will be celebrated by His Eminence, Angelo Cardinal Sodano, Dean of the College of Cardinals, along with other Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops.
