A new shepherd for Calgary

This morning, the Holy Father accepted the resignation from pastoral governance of the Diocese of Calgary (Alberta, Canada) presented by His Excellency, Frederick Bernard Henry.

The Pope has named the new Bishop of the Diocese of Calgary in the person of His Excellency, William Terrence McGrattan, who has, until now, served as Bishop of the Diocese of Peterborough.

His Excellency, William Terrence McGrattan was born in London, Ontario (Canada) on 19 September 1956.  Before entering the Seminary, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Western Ontario, and worked for a few years as a professional engineer.  He then completed his ecclesiastical studies at Saint Peter's Seminary in London and obtained the degree of Master of Divinity.

He was ordained a priest on May 2, 1987 for the Diocese of London.

In 1992, he was awarded a Licence in Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.  After his priestly ordination, he was entrusted with the following pastoral responsibilities: Associate Pastor of the parish of Saint Michael's in Leamington (1987); Associate Pastor of the parish of Saint Joseph's in Chatham (1987-1990); Director of the Office of Vocations (1994-1995).  In 1992, he began to teach Theology at Saint Peter's Seminary in London and from 1997 to 2009, he served as Rector of that Seminary.

On 6 November 2009, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto where he exercised his episcopal ministry in the central pastoral region of the Archdiocese.  He was appointed Bishop of Peterborough on 8 April 2014.

At the level of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, he is currently serving as a Member of the Commission for Doctrine and he is also the respondent Bishop to the Canadian Catholic Health Alliance and the Catholic Women's League of Canada (CWL).
