At 12:15pm today in Rome, the Holy Father, Pope Francis received in audience the Patriarchs and Major Archbishops.
His Holiness introduced addressed them at the beginning of the Plenary Assembly of the Congregation for Oriental Churches which is taking place in Rome from 9 to 12 October in the context of the centenary of the creation of their Congregation.
Venerated and dear brothers,
I am happy to be with you, Fathers and Leaders of the Oriental (Eastern) Catholic Churches to share the joys and sorrows of the faithful entrusted to your pastoral care.
Your solicitude for all the Churches is also demonstrated through your hierarchical communion with the Bishop of Rome, the successor of Saint Peter. In fact, the Bishop of Rome is the foundation of the Petrine Ministry, which serves to preside over charity and in charity (cf Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Romans, Preamble).
I am convinced that the connection between collegiality and the Petrine primacy provides both impulse and validation to the Church in order that I may exercise a diaconal primacy, that of Servus servorum Dei (Servant of the servants of God).
Among the tasks of the Successor of Peter, as it was for the election of the apostle Mathias (cf Acts 1:15-26), is that of appointing good bishops for the particular churches spread throughout the world. To you and to your Synods, I ask for your collaboration in this service that is so important, in order to find men who are gifted for this ministry.
