New Bishop for Saint John's, NF

This morning, the Holy Father, Pope Francis has accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Saint John's, Newfoundland (Canada) which was presented by His Excellency, Martin William Currie.

The Pope has appointed His Excellency, Peter Joseph Hundt, who until now has served as Bishop of Corner Brook and Labrador as the new Archbishop of Saint John's.

His Excellency, Peter Joseph Hundt was born on 26 August 1956 in Hanover, Ontario.  He completed his studies first at the University of Waterloo, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1978 and then at Saint Peter's Seminary in London, Ontario where he earned the degree of Master of Divinity in 1981.

He was ordained a priest on 8 May 1982 for the Diocese of Hamilton, Ontario.

From 1982 until 1985, he served as parochial vicar of the parish of Saint Eugene in Hamilton.  In 1987, he was granted a Licence in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum) in Rome.  He then served as Vice-Chancellor for two years and then as Chancellor for five years in the Diocese of Hamilton.  In 1994, he was appointed as Pastor of Holy Cross parish in Georgetown, Ontario.

On 11 February 2006, His Excellency was appointed as Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto.  He was Ordained a Bishop on 25 April of that year.

On 1 March 2011, he was appointed as Bishop of Corner Brook and Labrador; he has governed those two dioceses for more than seven years.

As part of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, His Excellency is currently serving as the Representative for Atlantic Canada and as a Member of the Canadian Catholic Aboriginal Council.  In addition, he is the Vice-President of the Atlantic Episcopal Assembly.
