The Holy Father, Pope Francis has sent a telegram expressing his condolences at the death - which occurred yesterday, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 - of His Eminence, Cardinal Serafim Fernandes de Araújo, Archbishop emeritus of Belo Horizonte (Brazil).
To His Excellency, the Most Reverend
Dom Walmor Oliveira de Azevedo
Archbishop of Belo Horizonte and
President of the National Episcopal Conference of Brazil
I received the sad news of the death of Cardinal Don Serafim Fernandes de Araújo and I wish to express my communion in prayer with his family and with all the faithful of your Archdiocese at this time of sadness.
I entrust to the Mercy of God, this beloved Cardinal who has so zealously served the Church, having been a priest during the Second Vatican Council and in particular, for more than fifty years during which time he dedicated himself to the Archbishop of Benezes. The love of Jesus Christ and his Church was constantly growing within his heart.
Raising our precious praises, under the guidance of the intercession of Our Lady of Safe Passage, I pray that God may receive into eternal happiness His good and faithful servant.
To that Archdiocesan community who now is crying over the loss of her beloved pastor, I send my blessing, that the Church which at this hour shares in this hour of sadness may proclaim the Resurrection.
