This morning, the Holy Father, Pope Francis has accepted the resignation from pastoral government of the Diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil (Quebec) presented by His Excellency, Lionel Gendron, PSS.
The Holy Father has appointed His Excellency, Claude Hamelin, who has until now been serving as titular Bishop of Apollonia and Auxiliary Bishop of Saint-Jean-Longueuil as the new Bishop of that same Diocese.
His Excellency, Claude Hamelin was born on 10 July 1951 in Sherrington (part of the Diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil), Quebec. He entered the Major Seminary of Montréal where he completed his studies in Philosophy and Theology. From 1980 to 1982, he studied Moral Theology at the Pontifical Alfonsianum Academy in Rome, where he earned a Licence.
He was ordained a priest on 3 December 1977 for the Diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil.
Until 1990, he exercised ministerial priesthood in scholastic pastoral activity, teaching in some public schools and in private colleges, and sharing weekend ministry in some local parishes. From 1989 to 1990, he served as Pastoral Administrator of the parish of Saint-Mathieu. From 1990 to 2000, he served as Pastor of Saint-Marc in Candiac (Quebec), and from 2000 to 2010, he served as Episcopal Vicar for some pastoral regions within the Diocese and as Diocesan Coordinator for Clergy.
From 2010 to 2016, he served as Vicar General of the Diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil and Moderator of the Diocesan Curia.
On 22 December 2015, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Saint-Jean-Longueuil and received Episcopal Ordination on 18 March 2016.
