As a result of typhoon Haiyan which, over the past weekend, struck the territory of the Philippines with extraordinary vehemence, particularly the islands of Leyte and Samar, leaving - according to data presently available but not yet confirmed - more than 10,000 victims, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, through the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, has decided to send an initial contribution of $150,000 in order to help with recovery efforts.
This sum, which will be distributed by the local Church, in the regions most affected by the disaster, will be used to carry out the works of assistance carried out in favour of the displaced and those most affected by the flooding. This is a first and immediate concrete expression of the sentiments of spiritual closeness and paternal encouragement which the Supreme Pontiff offers to the people and the territories devastated by the floods.
