Telegram of condolence
sent by the Holy Father, Pope Francis

To His Eminence, the Most Reverend
Carlo Cardinal Caffarra
Archbishop of Bologna
Via Altabella, 9
40126 Bologna

With sadness, I have learned the news of the death of Cardinal Giacomo Biffi, following a long sickness, lived with a serene soul and with trusting abandonment to the will of the Lord.  I wish to express to you, to the entire Diocesan community of Bologna, and to the family members of the late Prelate my profound participation in your suffering.  I think with affection of this dear brother in the Episcopate, who served the gospel with joy and wisdom, and who loved the Church tenaciously.

I remember with gratitude the intense and profuse pastoral work of this zealous priest who then served as Auxiliary Bishop of Milan, then as a solicitous and wise guide of that same Archdiocese.  And I also note the untiring service that he devoted to human and Christian formation of entire generations through his teaching and through the publication of many works.  His language proved to be particularly effective, direct and current.  His was a place of service to the word of God, especially his valued preaching of the Spiritual Exercises, in particular those held for the Roman Curia.

In this time of mourning, I raise fervent prayers to the Lord, that through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin and Saint Luke, God may welcome his faithful servant and wise shepherd into the celestial Jerusalem, and with all my heart, I impart to you, to the beloved local Church and to all those who knew and esteemed the late Cardinal, a special Apostolic Blessing.

Francis
