Death of Cardinal Furno

The Holy Father, Pope Francis, having learned of the death of Cardinal Carlo Furno, Archpriest emeritus of the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, and Grand Master emeritus of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, has sent a telegram of condolence this morning to the Dean of the College of Cardinals.

I have learned the news of the departure of the beloved Cardinal Carlo Furno and desire to express to you and to the entire College of Cardinals my sincere condolences.  I recall with thanksgiving, the precious collaboration he offered to the Holy See for many decades, especially as Apostolic Nuncio, Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major and Grand Master of the Equestian Order of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

I raise fervent prayers of supplication that the Lord, through the patroness of the Virgin Mary Salus Populi Romani, may welcome him into the glory of eternal peace and I send you, and all those who share in your sorrow at the death of this distinguished Prelate, my Apostolic blessing.
