Lighting the tree in Gubbio

At 6:00pm this evening, sitting before the screen of a tablet in the Casa Santa Marta, the Holy Father sent a pulse which illuminated the Christmas tree in Saint Peter's Square - the largest one in the world - which was decorated with lights atop Mount Ingino in Gubbio (Italy).

Greeting the people of Gubbio who were present for the tree-lighting through video-link, the Holy Father shared the following words:

Greetings of the Holy Father, Pope Francis
for the lighting of the Christmas tree in Gubbio

Good evening, I wish you a happy and a holy Christmas!

By illuminating the lights of the Christmas tree, we express the desire that the light of Christ might be illuminated in us.  A Christmas without light would not be Christmas.  My wish for you as you light up the Christmas tree this year is that there will be light in your souls, in your hearts; that you will be able to forgive others; that there will no longer be enmity or darkness within you ... that the light of Jesus, such a beautiful light, might shine.

Thank you so very much for your gift, it is beautiful!  I too offer you my warmest wishes, for peace and for happiness.

If there are any dark places in your soul, ask the Lord for pardon.  Christmas is a beautiful opportunity for us to polish our souls!  Don't be afraid, the priest is merciful; he will forgive everything in the name of God, because God forgives everything.

May the light of Christmas always illuminate your hearts, your families, your city.  And now, with this greeting, let us turn on the lights.

May the blessing of Almighty God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be always upon you.

Merry Christmas, and please pray for me!
