A new Syro-Catholic Exarch

This morning, the Holy Father, Pope Francis created a new Apostolic Exarchate for the Syro-Catholic faithful resident in Canada, including the territory taken from the existing Eparchy of Our Lady of Deliverance of Newark for Syro-Catholics (in the USA).  The seat of the new Exarchate is in Laval/Montreal (Quebec).

The Pope has named the first Apostolic Exarch for the new Exarchate in the person of Father Antoine Nassif, who is currently serving as Rector of the Patriarchal Seminary in Charfet (Lebanon), and has assigned him the Titular See of Serigene.

Earlier this week, the Holy Father also created a new Eparchy for Syro-Malaranka Catholics in Canada and in the United States.  The Syro-Malakara and the Syro-Catholic Churches are both part of the Eastern branches of the Church.  They are two of a number of uniate Churches (those which are in union with Rome, therefore recognizing the supremacy of the Bishop of Rome).

Father Antoine Nassif was born in Beirut (Lebanon) on February 21, 1969.  He was ordained in 1992 for the Patriarchal Syro-Catholic Eparchy.  Following his ordination, he was entrusted with various responsibilities including Director of the Charfet school, Associate Pastor of two parishes and Rector of the Patriarchal Seminary of Charfet.

The Exarch-elect speaks French, English and Italian.
