Something new for Syro-Malankara Catholics

This morning, the Holy Father, Pope Francis created the new Eparchy of Saint Mary, Queen of Peace, of the United States of America and Canada for Syro-Malankara Catholics and named its first Eparchal Bishop, His Excellency, Thomas Mar Eusebios Naickamparambil, who has until now served as the titular Bishop of Lares and Apostolic Exarch for Syro-Malankara Catholics residing in the United States, and as Apostolic Visitator for the faithful in Canada and in Europe.

Eparchies in the Eastern Church are equivalent to Dioceses in the Western Church, and Eparchs are equivalent to Bishops.  The title Exarch is used to refer to an Eastern-rite Bishop who is responsible for the pastoral care of a territory where there is no formally established Eparchy, and an Apostolic Visitator is someone who is appointed by the Pope to officially visit with the faithful in a given territory where he himself is not resident.

His Excellency, Thomas Mar Eusebios Naickamparambil

His Excellency, Thomas Mar Eusebios Naickamparambil was born in Mylapra, in the Archeparchy of Trivandrum on June 6, 1961 and was ordained a priest on December 29, 1986.  After having completed his studies in Philosophy and Theology at the Jnanadeepa in Poona, he continued his Doctoral studies in Rome.

He was entrusted with the following responsibilities:
  • Associate Pastor and Pastor of various communities,
  • Professor and then Dean of Philosophy at Saint Mary's Malankara Major Seminary,
  • Secretary General of the Major Archepiscopate of the Syro-Malankara Church,
  • Public Relations Officer,
  • Coordinator of inter-religious dialogue and Secretary of the Presbyteral Council,
  • Director of the Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, a school in Trivandrum and treasurer for the Mar Baselios Engineering College.
On July 14, 2010, he was named titular Bishop of Lares and the first Exarch for the Syro-Malakara faithful resident in the United States.  At the same time, he was entrusted with the post of Apostolic Visitator for the Syro-Malankara faithful resident in Canada and in Europe, tasks which now cease with his appointment as Eparchal Bishop of Saint Mary, Queen of Peace.

He speaks Malayalam, English, German, Italian, Hindi and he has a working knowledge of Syrian, Greek and French.

Statistical Data
The Eparchy includes approximately 11,500 faithful, especially in the States of Illinois, Texas, Michigan, Florida, New York and the District of Columbia (Washington, DC).  They are spread throughout 19 parishes and missions served by the same number of priests. The territory also includes three Institutes of religious women.

This new Ecclesiastical circumscription is created by the elevation of the Apostolic Exarchate for the Syro-Malankara faithful resident in the United States, including the extension of the boundaries to include Canada, where the pastoral care of the faithful has been coordinated most recently by His Excellency, Thomas Mar Eusebios Naickamparambil in his capacity as Apostolic Visitator.

The See will be located at Elmont (New York), at the Saint Vincent de Paul Malankara Catholic Cathedral.
