The Holy Father, Pope Francis has sent a telegram of condolence to the sister of His Eminence, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, who died yesterday in Hartford, Connecticut (USA).  At the time of his death, Cardinal Tauran was the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church and President of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue.

Telegram of Condolence
for the death of Cardinal Tauran

Mistress Geneviève Dubert

Having learned with great sadness of the death of your brother, His Eminence, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, I wish to express my condolences and my prayers for all the members of your family and for all those who are mourning his loss.

Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, who I confide the the mercy of God, has profoundly marked the life of the universal Church.  Having entered the Holy See's Diplomatic Service, he competently fulfilled the role of, among others, Secretary for Relations with States.

Appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to lead the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue, he was a wise and appreciated counsellor, especially in relation to matters of confidence and esteem which he was so apt at weaving with the members of the Muslim world.  As a result of his sense of service and of his love for the Church, I named him Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church.  I have fond memories of this deeply spiritual man who served the Church of Christ courageously in spite of the weight of his suffering.

May the Lord welcome his servant into everlasting peace and joy!  As a sign of comfort, I impart to you, Mistress Dubert, my Apostolic blessing, which I also extend to the members of your family, the College of Cardinals and to all those who were close to the deceased Cardinal, to the pastors and the faithful of the Archdiocese of Bordeaux and to all people who will participate at the celebration of his funeral.

Franciscus

The funeral Mass for Cardinal Tauran will be celebrated on Thursday, 12 July 2018 at 10:45am local time (4:45am EDT) at the Altar of the Chair inside the Vatican Basilica.  His Eminence, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside at the concelebrated liturgy along with other Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops who are present.  At the conclusion of the Eucharistic celebration, the Holy Father, Pope Francis will preside over the Rite of Final Commendation.
