Pope Francis has sent a letter, signed by the Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, to Cardinal Ricardo Blázquez Pérez, Archbishop of Valladolid and President of the Spanish Conference of Bishops containing a Message for the European Meeting of Youth which is being celebrated at Ávila from August 5 to 9 on the theme: In tough times, faithful friends of God, as part of the celebrations of the five hundredth anniversary of the birth of Saint Teresa of Avila.
Pope Francis cordially greets the organizers and the participants in the European Meeting of Youth, which is being celebrated in Ávila, to grow, deepen and bear witness to their faith and their love for the Church, following the example and the teaching of Saint Teresa of Jesus, during the fifth centenary since her birth.
Saint Teresa's expression: in tough times, faithful friends of God, has special resonance when addressed to youth and their desire for truth, goodness and beauty. Therefore, the Holly Father encourages you not to settle for a mediocre life that is void of aspirations, but to strive instead to grow in a profound life of friendship with Christ, and to become increasingly aware of the immense gift you received at Baptism and Confirmation: a gift that compels us to share the love of Christ with our fellow men.
Reminding you of the need to always grow in love for the Church and for your brothers (and sisters), His Holiness asks you to pray for him, and with affection, he implores the protection of the Virgin Mary as he willingly imparts to you all, the requested Apostolic Blessing.
