The trial continued

This morning, the Director of the Holy See Press Centre, Father Federico Lombardi, SJ gave accredited journalists the following information regarding the hearings currently in progress regarding the publication of embargoed news and documents.


Today, Tuesday 17 May, beginning at 11:00am, the latest session of the proceedings currently in progress regarding the publication of embargoed news and documents began in the Tribunal Hall in the Vatican City State.  Present this morning, in addition to the presiding judges (Professor Giuseppe Della Torre, Piero Antonio Bonnet, Paolo Papanti-Pellettier and Venerando Marano) and the Promotors of Justice (Professors Roberto Zannotti, Associate Promotor), the accused: Lucio Ángel Vallejo Balda, Francesca Immacolata Chaouqui and Nicola Maio.  The accused Emiliano Fittipaldi and Gianluigi Nuzzi were absent but were represented by their respective lawyers.  Also in attendance were the five lawyers: Emanuela Bellardini, Laura Sgrò, Rita Claudi Baffioni, Lucia Teresa Musso and Roberto Palombi.

At the beginning of the session, the President read the following Court Order aloud: In view of the deposition presented by the Deputy Commissioner Gianluca Gauzzi Broccoletti during the audience held on 16 May 2016; it was noted that certain evidence emerged that was present in the computers that were seized which was not known either to the Promotors of Justice nor to the accused; since article 400 of the Code of Criminal Procedures provides for the acquisition of documents exhibited by the witnesses during the course of their deposition; it behooves the Promotor of Justice and the defence lawyers to present requests exclusively in relation to the aforesaid documentation in proposals to be heard during the audience which will be held on 24 May 2016 beginning at 3:30pm.  The Court reserves the continuation of the hearing of testimony from Gianluca Gauzzi Broccoletti, as well as from Stefano De Santis and from experts (17 V 2016).

The transcript of the proceedings from yesterday afternoon concerning the testimony of Gauzzi Broccoletti was then read aloud and approved.  This morning's session ended shortly before 11:30am.

As was indicated in the Court Order, the next session has been called for 24 May 2016 beginning at 3:30pm.

Please note: Article 400 of the Code of Criminal Proceedings, in the second section, refers to the case in which during the trial, the Court should become aware of new evidence that is clearly influential.
