Homily for the funeral of Gaston Desrosiers

 Here is the text of the homily I prepared for the celebration of the funeral, held yesterday, for one of the long-standing members of the Francophone community in this city.

Chers amis, nous sommes réunis ici ce matin afin de nous rappeler la vie de notre frère Gaston, de remercier le Seigneur qui nous a accordé tant d’année vécues avec lui, et de réfléchir un peu au sujet de la sagesse qu’il a partagée avec nous.

Comme nous l’avons entendu dans la première lecture qui a été choisie pour cette célébration,  le jour viendra où le Seigneur, Dieu de l’univers, préparera pour tous les peuple un festin sur la montagne (Is 25, 6).Nous voici en haut de cette montagne avec une vue spectaculaire de la ville où notre ami Gaston a habité pendant tant d’années.

Selon les Écritures le Seigneur se trouvait souvent en haut d’une montagne. C’est un point de rencontre où les êtres humains ont l’impression de communiquer plus facilement avec Dieu. Peut-être que c’est à propos qu’on se trouve ici aujourd’hui, le jour où nous offrons nos humbles prières en espérant que le Seigneur accorde une place favorable à Gaston dans son royaume éternel.

En ce même lieu, nous prions également pour nous-mêmes, demandant au Seigneur qu’il enlève le voile de deuil qui nous enveloppe (Is 25, 7) en ce moment. Assurés par notre foi, nous croyons qu’il détruira la mort pour toujours et qu’existe pour nous l’espérance de retrouver notre cher frère Gaston un jour lorsque nous arriverons nous-mêmes au royaume des cieux.

Comment est-ce que nous pouvons être assurés de cette promesse? Le Seigneur l’a expliqué à ses disciples dans l’Évangile que nous avons entendu aujourd’hui.  À la fin des temps, quand le Fils de l’homme viendra dans sa gloire, il dira à ceux qui se trouvera à sa droite: venez les bénis de mon Père, recevez en héritage le royaume qui a été préparé pour vous depuis la création du monde (Mt 25, 34).

Nous pouvons tous témoigner des moments tout au long de la vie de Gaston où il a reconnu la présence de Jésus qui avait faim, qui avait soif, qui était nu, qui était emprisonné, qui avait besoin de quoique ce soit ... et il a toujours répondu à ses besoins. Cet homme de foi a vécu 60 ans de mariage, toujours en partenariat avec sa femme bien heureuse, toujours entouré de sa chère famille, et ses amis.  Puisque son séjour sur la terre et maintenant achevé, qu’il trouve place maintenant auprès du Seigneur et qu’il veille sur nous jusqu’au temps où nous nous verrons de nouveau dans la maison du Père.

Homily for the funeral of Gaston Desrosiers

Dear friends, we are gathered here this morning to remember the life of our brother Gaston, to thank the Lord who has granted us so many years of life with him, and to reflect a bit on the wisdom that he has shared with us.

As we have heard in the first reading chosen for this celebration, the day will come when the Lord, God of the universe, will prepare for all people a feast upon the mountain (Is 25: 6).  Here we are on top of this mountain, with a spectacular view of the the city where our friend Gaston lived for so many years.

According to the Scriptures, the Lord is often found on top of mountains.  This is the point where human beings often have experiences of meeting God most easily.  Perhaps it is fitting that we are here today, the day on which we are offering our humble prayers, hoping that the Lord will grant a place of honour in his kingdom to Gaston.

In this place, we are also praying for ourselves, asking the Lord to take away the veil of sadness that envelops us (Is 25: 7) at this moment.  Assured by our faith, we believe that He will destroy death forever and that there is hope that we will meet Gaston once again, when we ourselves arrive in the kingdom of heaven.

How can we be assured of this promise?  The Lord explained it to his disciples in the Gospel passage that we heard today.  At the end of time, when the Son of Man comes in his glory, he will say to those at his right hand: come, you who are blessed by by Father, receive the inheritance prepared for you since the creation of the world (Mt 25: 34).

We can all recall moments during Gaston's life when he recognized the presence of Jesus who was hungry, thirsty, naked, imprisoned ... in need of something ... and he always responded to the needs of others.  This man of faith was married to his beloved Hélène for 60 years, constantly in love with her, always surrounded by his beloved family and his friends.  Since his earthly life is now ended, may he find his place with the Lord where he will watch over us until the day that we see him again in the Father's house.
