Celebrating the Ascension of the Lord

In some parts of the world (including in Vatican City), today is observed as Ascension Thursday.  The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord may be celebrated today or on the following Sunday (as it is in Canada).

Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and raising his hands he blessed them.  No as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven.  They worshiped him and then went back to Jerusalem full of joy, and they were continually in the Temple praising God. (Lk 24:50-53).

This holy Solemnity, which the Acts of the Apostles situates forty days after the Resurrection, commemorates Jesus' return to his Father in heaven.
