His Eminence, Stanislaw Nagy, SCJ (a member of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), died this morning in Krakow, where he was living for the past number of years. His Holiness dispatched a telegram of condolence today, addressed to His Eminence, Stanislaw Dziwisz, Archbishop of Krakow, in which he expressed is condolences.
His Eminence, Stanislaw Kazimierz Nagy, SCJ, born September 30, 1921 in Bierun, Silesia, Poland, was a member of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, otherwise known as the Dehonians. He joined the Order in 1937 and was ordained a priest in 1945. He served as Rector in Krakow-Plaszow and Tarnow, and as Professor at the Catholic University of Lublin. In the early 1970s, he served on the International Theological Commission, the joint Catholic Lutheran Commission and on the editorial staff of the Catholic Encyclopedia. He attended Synods in 1981 and 1985, wrote books on Ecumenism and Blessed John Paul II. He was consecrated as Archbishop and created Cardinal Deacon of Santa Maria della Scala on October 21, 2003.

Having heard the news of the death of the venerable Cardinal Stanislaw Nagy, I wish to express to you, to the entire Diocesan community, to the family of the worthy prelate and to the Congregation of the Dehonian Fathers, the assurance that I share in their pain as we think with affection of our dear brother who served the Gospel and the Church so generously.
Especially in the academic world, he was a beloved scholar and an experienced teacher of theological disciplines. I recall with gratitude his fruitful collaboration, valued and mutual friendship with the esteemed Blessed Pope John Paul II, as well as his fervent ecumenical involvement.
I earnestly pray to the Lord, that through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, He may accord to His faithful servant and eminent Churchman, the fullness of joy and eternal peace, and I impart with all my heart, to all those who are saddened at his parting, the comfort of an Apostolic Blessing.
