Vatican Television going digital

At noon today in Rome, in the John Paul II Hall, within the offices of the Vatican Press Office, there was a Press Conference during which a new agreement was unveiled between the Vatican Television Centre (CTV) and Channel 21 (which transmits from the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires).  In addition, details about a new Master Control Room which is being implemented for CTV, which will facilitate the digital archiving of video material, were outlined.

Present at this morning's Press Conference to provide explanations about these projects were His Excellency, Claudio Maria Celli, President of the Vatican Television Centre's Administrative Council; Monsignor Dario E. ViganĂ², Director General of the Vatican Television Centre; Doctor Julio Rimoldi, Director of Channel 21 (Buenos Aires); Mister Stefano D’Agostini, CTV ; and Doctor Benito Manlio Mari, Country Sales Manager, Sony, Italy.

The Vatican Television Centre, as part of the ongoing work of digitizing its television signals, has acquired mobile signals in high definition, and is progressing in partnership with Sony, toward the construction of a new Master Control Room, which will be the hub of all the signals, and will be located on the top floor of the CTV building, located within Vatican City.

The new technologically advanced structure will begin the process of transforming and processing signals such as its existing files, and be better equipped to store and exchange them as a result of this transformation.

The process of preparing video material, including shooting, editing and archiving will be tapeless, achieved without the use of magnetic tape, which have been until now the weak point for the creation and maintenance of CTV's most valuable archives, which include 30 years of images from the pontificates of Blessed John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.

Also included in the process of archiving will be materials accessed through the agreement between CTV and Channnel 21 (Buenos Aires), which will allow CTV to acquire and distribute for Italy and Europe, archives relating to the activities of the Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio up to and including March 13, 2013, the day of his election to the Throne of Peter.
