Condolences for a former President

This morning, the Vatican Press Centre published the text of a telegram that was sent by the Holy Father to express his sympathy at the death of Senator Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, former President of the Italian Republic.

I wish to offer my heartfelt condolences to you, to your children and to all your family in this moment of suffering at the death of Senator Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, President emeritus of the Italian Republic, who held public office with masterful discretion and a strong sense of the State.

Remembering the sincere friendship that linked this illustrious man with Saint John Paul II, I offer fervent prayers, invoking mercy from the Lord so that his soul will know eternal peace.  With these sentiments, I send you and yours my Apostolic blessing.
