Ties to home

This morning, the British Broadcasting Corporation is reporting that there was major flooding in Argentina.  More than 50 people are known to have died as a result of heavy flooding caused by a sudden downpour of rain.  More than 40cm (16in) of rain fell in less than two hours in La Plata and Buenos Aires during the evening hours between Monday and Tuesday of this week.  Streets were instantly turned into rivers and cars (which were turned into death traps) had to be replaced with boats in order for navigation to be possible.  The Argentinian army had to be deployed in order to help the sick and the elderly to safety.

Half way around the world, the Vatican's Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone sent a telegram of condolence to the Archbishop of Buenos Aires this morning on behalf of the Holy Father:

Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone

Message of Condolence
on behalf of His Holiness, Pope Francis
(original text in Spanish)

His Excellency, the Most Reverend Mario Aurelio Poli
Archbishop of Buenos Aires

Pope Francis, deeply saddened by the news of the serious damage caused by torrential rains in recent days, is united with you in imploring the Lord for the eternal rest of the deceased, and wishes to express his paternal spiritual closeness to all the families of those who are suffering.

The Holy Father also encourages ecclesiastical and civil institutions and all people of good will to assist all those who have lost their homes or their personal property with their charity and their prayer in a spirit of Christian solidarity.  With these sentiments, His Holiness imparts to those who have been affected, the apostolic blessing as a sign of comfort and closeness to the beloved Argentinian people.

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone
His Holiness' Secretary of State

Archbishop Mario Aurelio Poli

On Wednesday, March 13 of this year, the Cardinal electors chose His Excellency, the Most Reverend Jorge Mario Bregoglio, then Archbishop of Buenos Aires to serve as the Bishop of Rome, effectively leaving the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires vacant, and in need of a pastor.  On March 28, only days after the celebration of his Innauguration Mass, His Holiness appointed Archbishop Poli as the new pastor of the Church of Buenos Aires, effectively demonstrating his continued pastoral concern for the people of the local Church he served until just last month.

Archbishop Poli was born in Buenos Aires on November 29, 1947, and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires on November 25, 1978.  Pope John Paul II appointed him as Titular Bishop of Abidda and Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires on February 8, 2002.  On April 20 of that year, he received Episcopal Ordination, and he subsequently served as Bishop of Santa Rosa (Argentina) from June 24, 2008 until his appointment as Archbishop of Buenos Aires last month.  Archbishop Poli will be installed in his new pastoral office on April 20 of this year.
