Skiers at the Vatican

At 9:00am local time this morning, in the foyer of the Paul VI Hall, the Holy Father, Pope Francis received in audience a group of athletes from the Austrian Ski Federation.

Greetings of the Holy Father, Pope Francis
offered to members of the
Austrian Ski Federation

Dear friends,

I am pleased to welcome you here in the Vatican today.

When I think of Austria with her alpine mountains, I also think of winter sports.  Skiing has a great importance in the tradition of your country; there is great excitement among all your people when you cheer for exciting races.

Above all, you are models for many young people.  But you are also models of integration, not only for sports competitions, but also for the virtues and values that are represented in sports: commitment, perseverance, determination, honesty, solidarity and a sense of team spirit.

Through the example you provide, you contribute to the formation of society.  Always be messengers of the unifying strength of sports and of hospitality!  And, returning to the natural wealth of your country, be messengers of protecting the environment and of the beauty of God's creation.

Thank you for your visit!  May the Lord bless you all.
