Condolences to France

The Holy Father has sent a telegram of condolence for the death - which occurred yesterday, 4 September 2019 in France - of His Eminence, Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, President emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace; and of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum.

Telegram of the Holy Father, Pope Francis
for the death of Cardinal Roger Etchegaray

His Excellency, Marc Aillet
Bishop of Bayonne, Lescar and Oloron
Bayonne

Learning with great sadness of the death of Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, I wish to express my sincere condolences and my union in prayer.  Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, who I confide to the mercy of God, profoundly marked the life of the Church in France and the universal Church.

From Bayonne, his diocese of origin, to Marseille where he served as Archbishop, he was a zealous pastor, beloved by the people who he was called to serve.  Called to Rome by Saint John-Paul II, at the head of the Pontifical Councils for Justice and Peace and Cor Unum, then as Vice-Dean of the College of Cardinals, he was a valued and appreciated counsellor, particularly in delicate situations for hte life of the Church in various regions of the world.  I have fond memories of this man of deep faith who's eyes were focused on the extremities of the earth, always alert when it came to proclaiming the gospel to men and women today.

May the Lord welcome his Servant into his peace and the joy that never ends!  As a sign of comfort, I grant the Apostolic Blessing to Your Excellency, to the Bishops who are present, to those who are dear to the deceased Cardinal, to those who are part of the Diocese of Marseille and to all those who will take part in hope in the celebration of his funeral.

Francis
