Can Ramadan be for Christians?

On Monday of this week, the Muslim world began the discipline of Ramadan.  For the next month or so, those who follow this discipline will fast during daylight hours and be called to a keener understanding of the plight of the poor in the world.

What about Christians?  Is there a way that we too can take advantage of the summer days to turn our attention to those who are hungry (starving in some cases) and in need, even as we enjoy the bounty of fruits, vegetables and other summertime produce?

At least one parish in Edmonton has taken up the challenge to fast for those who are in the Horn of Africa and facing famine in these days.  Imagine what would happen if those who could would join them, and like we do during the discipline of Lent, donate the proceeds to Development and Peace, who are on the ground already, bringing necessary assistance to those who are hungry, thirsty and perishing today.

The pastor of St. Michael-Resurrection parish in Edmonton has challenged his parishioners to raise $10,000.  I wonder if we can go one better!  Imagine for a moment what might be possible if we all took one day a week to fast, and donated even just $10 a week for the next four weeks!  That would make $20 since the Canadian government has agreed to match all contributions toward the Horn of Africa famine relief effort!
