A new Bishop for the Canadian Troops

The Holy Father, Pope Francis has accepted the resignation from pastoral government of the Military Ordinariate for Canada which was presented by His Excellency, Donald Thériault, in accordance with the provisions of the Code of Canon Law, Canon 401, § 2.

The Pope has named Father Scott McCaig, C.C., until now the Superior General of the Companions of the Cross, as the new Military Ordinary for Canada.

Meet Bishop-elect Scott McCaig, C.C.
the newly-appointed Military Ordinary for Canada

Father Scott McCaig, C.C. was born in Duncan (British Columbia) on December 12, 1965.

He completed university studies at Cariboo College in Kamloops (1985-1987), then at the University of Victoria (1988-1989) and at Carleton University in Ottawa (1989-1990), the result of which was a university degree in History.

Following a year of discernment, in 1990, he pronounced his first vows in the Companions of the Cross and entered into formation for priesthood at Saint Augustine's Seminary in Toronto.  When his formation was completed, he was granted a Master of Divinity degree.

He was ordained a deacon on October 30, 1994 and a priest on June 3, 1995.

He was first incardinated in the Archdiocese of Ottawa (from the date of his Deaconal Ordination) until 2003, and then incardinated in the Companions of the Cross, when they were approved by the then Archbishop of Ottawa, His Excellency, Marcel Gervais and officially established as a Society of Apostolic Life with the faculty to incardinate their members.

Bishop-elect McCaig exercised his presbyteral ministry in various parishes.  From 2000 to 2006, he served as a member of the Executive Council of the Companions and as Director of Formation of that same Society of Apostolic Life.  In 2006, he was elected as Superior General.  His mandate was reaffirmed in 2012 and he has held this position until the present day.
