Pope Francis to visit Armenia this weekend

This weekend (June 24-26), Pope Francis will undertake an Apostolic voyage to Armenia.  The itinerary for this trip was published in advance, as is the usual custom.  This morning in Rome, Father Federico Lombardi, SJ, Director of the Holy See Press Centre held a press conference to illustrate some details about the upcoming trip.

Also present at the briefing, as an invited guest and an expert in the history, culture and the current situation of the Church in Armenia was Monsignor Antranig Ayvazian, a Professor at the University of Yerevan.

Population and Church Structure
The country covers a surface area of 29,800 square kilometres and has a total population of 2,914,000 which gives it a population density of 98 persons per square kilometre.  There are a total of 280,000 Catholics: 9.6% of the total population.  There is one diocese in Armenia which has 20 parishes.  The average population of each of those 20 parishes is 14,000.

People involved in the work of the Church
As of 30 May 2016, there are 3 Bishops in Armenia who are working with 27 priests: 21 of whom are diocesan and 6 of whom belong to Religious communities.  There are also 2 Religious brothers and 20 professed women Religious.

Details of Pastoral care requirements
There are 10,370 Catholics per priest and 5,385 Catholics per pastoral worker (priests, brothers and Religious women).  There are 1.4 priests per parish and 57.7 priests per 100 people actively involved in pastoral activities.

Vocations
There are currently 63 minor Seminarians (Philosophy studies) and 6 major Seminarians (Theology studies).  That translates to 0.21 major Seminarians per 100,000 inhabitants, 2.14 major Seminarians per 100,000 Catholics and 22.22 major seminarians per 100 priests.

Catholic Education
There is currently one Catholic middle/secondary school which has 35 students.

Care and Social Centres belonging to or staffed by priests or Religious
At the present time, there is 1 hospital, 20 surgery centres, 5 centres for the elderly and disabled and 3 other care centres.



The Holy Father will begin his voyage on Friday of this week.
