This morning, the Holy Father sent a telegram of condolence to the Cardinal Archbishop of São Paulo (Brazil), on the occasion of the death of Cardinal Paulo Evaristo Arns, OFM, Archbishop emeritus of São Paulo.

Greatly saddened to receive the news of the death of the venerable brother Cardinal Paulo Evaristo Arns, I wish to express to you, to your Auxiliary Bishops, to the clergy, the religious communities and the faithful of the Archdiocese of São Paulo as well as the family of the deceased my prayers for all of you as you mourn this fearless Pastor who throughout his ecclesial ministry bore authentic witness to the Gospel in the midst of his people, pointing out the path of truth in charity and service to the community, paying attention to those who are most underprivileged.
I give thanks to the Lord for having given the Church such a generous pastor and I offer fervent prayers, asking that God will welcome his good and faithful servant into the joy of eternal happiness, and I send the Archdiocesan community who now mourns the loss of her beloved Pastor as well as the Church of Brazil who in him found safety and to all those who share in this time of sadness which at the same time proclaims the Resurrection, the comfort of my Apostolic benediction.
