Here is the text of the reflection I prepared for the Masses celebrated during the first weekend of my service in the communities of Elliot Lake and Blind River.
At the beginning of each of the liturgies, a member of the local community read aloud the text of the Letter of Appointment by which His Excellency, Marcel Damphousse, Bishop of Sault Ste. Marie has appointed me to act in his name in this portion of the Lord's vineyard.
and We grant you all the necessary faculties, which pertain to the said office according to the dictates of Canon Law, the Decrees of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops and our local diocesan discipline.
As Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima, Ste-Marie and Ste-Famille, you will serve the People of God in the aforesaid Parish communities by word and deed, proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel and celebrating the Sacred Liturgy with zeal and devotion. You should visit the homes and the schools, the poor and the sick, the young and the old, always encouraging them to grow in their call to be faithful disciples of Christ and active members of His Church.
You will have the letter of your appointment read in the presence of the parishioners on the first Sunday of your arrival in the above parishes.
This appointment will take effect on July 1, 2017.

In the gospel passage that we have just heard, Jesus speaks about the importance of welcoming (Mt 10:40-41).This weekend, there are ten priests in our diocese who are arriving in new places and beginning a new phase of our journeys. Having left behind that which was familiar to us, we now count on those who are unknown to us to open their hearts to us and to welcome us into their communities, their lives and their hearts.
Ever since I received the news that I was being called to serve the parishes of Our Lady of Fatima and Ste-Marie in Elliot Lake and Ste-Famille in Blind River, I have been praying for you, asking God to grant you the grace of an open heart, a heart of welcome that is eager to share with me the joy of your faith and the concerns that are dear to you. The conversation that we are about to begin is not unlike the conversation that took place between Elisha and the couple in Shunem who made a place in their home to welcome him (cf 2 Kings 4:8-10). Beginning today, God is calling me to be part of your lives, to sit at your tables, to share joyful moments as well as difficult times with you, all the while seeking opportunities to sing with you the steadfast love of the Lord (Ps 8:1).
At the very beginning of our journey, let us entrust ourselves to the maternal care of Mary our Mother and to the intercession of the Holy Family. There will be good days ahead, and there will be times when difficult decisions will have to be made. Together we will walk the road ahead in faith, remembering that the journey we travel is a faith-filled response to God's invitation. Saint Paul reminds us that we have been buried with him by baptism into death (Rom 6:4). Walking in faith is therefore a daily process of dying to self. May the Blessed Virgin and Saint Joseph guide our steps.
As we celebrate Canada Day today, all the Bishops across our country are consecrating Canada to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We have been asked to share the text of the Consecration with you today, so I will read it to you now.
Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and Mother of the Church, when the first Christian believers came to these shores, they planted a Cross made of the fresh timber of the New World as a sign of their faith in your Son and the power of his Resurrection, placing their lives under your maternal protection and venerating you as the Immaculate Conception.
You show us how to live a life free from sin in Christ Jesus and, by our baptism, we hope to share fully with you in the freedom of the glory of the children of God. You have accompanied us on our path through history, in times of peace, conflict, and reconciliation,
and as we arrived at a greater sense of unity and nationhood.
With full confidence we come before you today giving thanks to God on the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation. Gathered in the communion of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we place ourselves completely in the sanctuary of your Heart and commit the past, the present and the future of Canada to your maternal care.
For this reason, I, Marcel Damphousse, Bishop of Sault Ste. Marie, commend to your Immaculate Heart the portion of the People of God entrusted to me. Together with the other Archbishops, Metropolitans, Bishops and Eparchs of Canada, I also consecrate the people of our country to your maternal Heart which teaches us to trust in God’s loving plan.
Immaculate Mother of God, we find ourselves at a crossroads in our history; we are grateful for advances in science and new discoveries, yet we know the human heart is tempted by selfish interests
and false ideas about the human person and freedom. Help us, as Catholics, to live in peace with all people of good will and to dialogue with respect and friendship.
Loving Mother of Our Lord, help us to uphold religious freedom in Canada, and the natural rights of parents and families; inspire us to protect the unborn, to help the poor, the marginalized, and to give support to the infirm and elderly. Weighed down at times by our concerns, but hopeful for the future, we turn to you, the new Eve, Mother of all the living, for help and for strength.
Your Son is the beginning of God’s New Creation and you are his Masterpiece: intercede for our Churches, for all our people, especially the Indigenous Peoples, the first stewards of this land of Canada, and all who come here to live, take refuge, or visit.
May the Cross of your Son, planted on Canadian soil and in Canadian hearts, be known as the Tree of Life, whose fruit is visible and available to all in the garden of this world.
Mary our Mother, we place our country Canada in the sanctuary of your Holy Heart for we know that there we will find Jesus, who lives and reigns with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
forever and ever. Amen.

Depuis le moment où j'ai reçu la nouvelle concernant l'appel du Seigneur qui m'appelle à desservir les communautés chrétiennes de Our Lady of Fatima, Ste-Marie et Ste-Famille, je prie pour vous, demandant au Seigneur de vous accorder la grâce d'un cœur overt et un esprit d'accueil pour que nous puissions partager la joie de notre foi et les préoccupations qui habitent nos cœurs. La conversation qui commence dès aujourd'hui est semblable à celle qui a été décrit dans la première lecture de cette messe. Des aujourd'hui, le Seigneur m'appelle à me faire part de votre vie quotidienne, de m'assoir avec vous à la table, de partager des moments de joie et de peine, tout en cherchant à chanter ensemble l'amour du Seigneur.
Au tout début de notre parcours, confions nous au coeur maternel de Marie, notre Mère céleste et à l'intercession de la Sainte Famille. Je suis certain qu'ensemble nous vivrons des bons moments; il y aura également certains moments qui seront plus difficiles. Ensemble, nous acheminerons ensemble tout en nous rappelant que notre parcours n'est qu'une réponse à l'invitation du Seigneur. Saint-Paul nous rappelle que nous avons tous été enterré avec le Christ le jour même de notre baptême. Il s'agit donc d'un attitude de renoncement à nous mémé. Que la Sainte Vierge et son époux nous accompagne tout au long de notre route.
Aujourd'hui nous célébrons la fête du Canada. D'un océan à l'autre, les évêques énoncerons un acte de consécration de notre pays au cœur immaculé de Marie. On nous a demandé de partager avec vous le texte de cette consécration alors je la lirai dès maintenant.

de la Bienheureuse Vièrge Marie
Bienheureuse Vierge Marie, Mère de Dieu et Mère de l'Église, quand les premiers croyants chrétiens sont débarqués sur nos rives, ils ont planté une croix faite du bois frais du Nouveau Monde en témoignage de leur foi en ton Fils et en la puissance de sa Résurrection, plaçant ainsi leurs vies sous ta protection maternelle et te vénérant comme l'Immaculée Conception.
Tu nous montres comment mener une vie exempte de péché dans le Christ Jésus et, par notre baptême, nous espérons partager pleinement avec toi la liberté de la gloire donnée aux enfants de Dieu. Tu nous as accompagnés tout au long de notre chemin à travers l'histoire, en temps de paix, de conflit et de réconciliation, jusqu'au moment où nous sommes parvenus à un sentiment plus fort d'unité et d'appartenance à la patrie.
Pleins de confiance, nous venons à toi aujourd'hui pour rendre grâce au Seigneur à l'occasion du 150e anniversaire de la Confédération du Canada. Rassemblés dans la communion du Père, du Fils et du Saint-Esprit, nous nous plaçons complètement dans le sanctuaire de ton Coeur et confions le passé, le présent et l'avenir du Canada à tes soins maternels.
Pour cette raison, moi, Monseigneur Marcel Damphousse, évêque de Sault Ste-Marie, je remets à ton Coeur Immaculé la portion du Peuple de Dieu qui m'a été confiée. Avec les autres archevêques, métropolites, évêques et éparques du Canada, je consacre aussi tout le peuple de notre pays à ton Coeur maternel qui nous enseigne à faire confiance au projet d'amour de Dieu.
Mère immaculée de Dieu, nous nous trouvons à la croisée des chemins dans notre histoire; nous sommes reconnaissants pour les progrès de la science et les nouvelles découvertes, toutefois, nous savons que le coeur humain peut être trompé par les intérêts égoïstes, et les conceptions erronées de la personne et de la liberté humaines. Aide-nous, en tant que catholiques, à vivre en paix avec toutes les personnes de bonne volonté et à dialoguer avec respect et amitié.
Mère aimante de Notre Seigneur, aide-nous à défendre la liberté de religion au Canada, et les droits naturels de parents et de familles; inspire-nous à protéger les enfants à naître, à aider les pauvres et les marginalisés, et à soutenir les malades et les personnes âgées. Puisse la Croix de ton Fils, plantée en sol canadien et dans les coeurs des Canadiens et Canadiennes, être reconnue comme l'Arbre de vie, dont les fruits sont visibles et accessibles à chacune et à chacun dans le jardin de ce monde.
