While the public appearances scheduled for the Holy Father in Cuba are taking a bit of a break, don't be fooled into thinking that the work is also taking a break. What happens in the quiet of places away from the public eye can often be very instrumental in the laying of groundwork for healing that must take place.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the proverbial pond, there is another kind of instrumentation taking place. One of the surprise acts to hit the stage in the now famous Britain's Got Talent (which has spawned other such talent shows right here in this country) was the recent appearance of a boys choir called Only Boys Aloud: pun absolutely intended.
This group of youngsters is aged 14-19 years, and made up of any number of those who have lived far too close to the fringes of society. Give them something to be proud of though and great things can happen. There's a long tradition of music in the Welsh moors, and especially in the hills and dales of South Wales; that's exactly where most of these choir members were born. Respecting the lengthy tradition of choral music, this group has been assembled in the hopes of keeping the tradition alive, and from what this listener can hear, there's no danger of either music or respect for the native language melting into the shadows any time soon.
To those who work with our young people to inspire the use of their many talents, and to those who aim for the stars, this is proof that it's all worth the effort.
