Pope receives disabled parliamentarian

This morning in Rome, the Holy Father received in audience the Honorable Ileana Argentin, a disabled person who is well known for her commitment, her responsibility and her competence in the field of disabilities, first as part of the City of Rome and currently as part of the Italian Parliament.

Ms. Argentin wrote a personal letter to the Holy Father, in which she asked for permission to meet with him in order to speak with him concerning various problems facing those with disabilities.  The Pope responded after a brief period of time, inviting her to meet with him.  Their dialogue took place this morning in the Apostolic Palace and lasted about 30 minutes.

The main theme which was addressed by the Honorable Ms. Argentin during her meeting with the Holy Father was that of support which can be given to the parents of severely disabled people.  They live with great concern about what will happen to their children when they themselves have died, and the further concern about the added burden such care will place on siblings once their parents are no longer able to provide for their disabled children.  Some other subjects were also touched upon, including the elimination of architectural barriers in public buildings and in ecclesiastical structures.

The Pope was attentive and very much interested in the matters raised by Ms. Argentin.  He assured her with  expressions great cordiality, of his participation and encouragement for all people who live with disabilities, as well as for the various initiatives being undertaken in order to face with ever-growing commitment, all the problems and difficulties encountered as a result of disabilities.
