This afternoon, the Holy Father, Pope Francis visited the Morelia Cathedral.
In the sacristy, he greeted 14 Rectors from Mexican universities and 6 Leaders of other Christian denominations before entering the Cathedral where he was welcomed by a few hundred children who were studying their catechism. The Holy Father shared a few off the cuff words with them.
Sit down! Good afternoon! I know that you come from all the parishes in the city and from the surrounding dioceses and from some of the schools. Thank you very much for your visit.
You want to ask Jesus to help you grow with much love, with much love, like he himself had. With much love for Christians in order to fulfill the commandment that Jesus gave us: Love God above all else and love your neighbour like Jesus loves, more or less like we love one another, like Jesus loves us.
And let us also ask the Virgin to take care of us, to bless us. Above all, every one of you, now, think in your heart about your family and about your friends, and if you are angry with someone, think about them also, ask the Virgin to take care of them too: this is one way to go about making friends and not enemies, because life is not meant to be spent with enemies; the one who helps us to make true friends is God who lives in our hearts.
So now, silently, let us think about our families, about our friends, and about those who we don't like too, so that God can bless them and all other people who help us - the nuns, the priests, the catechists, our teachers in school - all those who help us to grow. And a special blessing too for our fathers, our mothers and our grandparents. Silence, let's close our eyes and pray for all this.
Hail Mary ...
And I ask you please to pray for me. Will you do that? (They respond: Yes). Good, I like that!
I greet the choir who has dedicated a song. I want to congratulate you, really, congratulations. Art and sports widen the soul and help us to grow well, with fresh air and by not stifling our lives. Continue to be creative, continue like that, looking for beauty, for good things, for things that will last forever, and never allow yourselves to be trampled by anyone. Is this clear? Should I give you a blessing? (They answer: Yes).
And please, I ask you to pray for me, and every now and then, sing me a song even if we are far apart. Good bye! See you later. God bless you.
At the conclusion of his visit, standing in front of the Cathedral, the President of the Municipality of Morelia presented the Pope with the keys to the city.
The Holy Father then travelled in the popemobile to the José Maria Morelos y Pavón Stadium for a meeting with young people.
