At the conclusion of the Mass celebrated in Saint Peter's Square on the occasion of the Jubilee of the sick and of persons with disabilities, before reciting the Angelus, the Holy Father addressed the participants in these words:
Dear brothers and sisters!
Yesterday in Vercelli, Father Giacomo Abbondo was proclaimed Blessed. He lived in the eighth century; he was in love with God, he was educated, he was always available to his parishioners. We share the joy and thanksgiving of the Diocese of Vercelli. And also that of the Diocese of Monreale, where today, Sister Carolina Santocanale, the foundress of the Capuchin Sisters of the Immaculate of Lourdes was Beatified. Born in a noble family in Palermo, she abandoned their comforts and became poor among the poor. From Christ, and especially from the Eucharist, she drew strength for her spiritual maternity and her tenderness with those who were weak.
In the context of the Jubilee of the sick, an International Convention has been taking place in recent days, dedicated to the care of persons affected by Hansen's disease. I greet all the organizers and the participants and wish them fruitful commitment in their fight against that disease.
Today is the World Day Against Child Labour. Let us all renew our joint efforts to remove the causes of this modern slavery, that deprives millions of children of their fundamental rights and exposes them to serious peril. Today, there are so many child slaves in the world!
I affectionately greet the pilgrims who have come from Italy and from various other countries for this Jubilee. I especially thank you, who wanted to be here, even in your various states of illness or disability. My heartfelt thanks also to the doctors and the health professionals who, in their Health stations, which are set up at the four main Basilicae are offering specialized visits to hundreds of people living on the outskirts of the city of Rome. Many thanks to you all!
May the Virgin Mary, to whom we address our prayer, always accompany you on your journey.
