At 9:00am local time this morning (3:00am EDT), in the presence of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, the first General Congregation of the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazon Region began. The theme of this gathering is: Amazonia: new paths for the Church and for an integral ecology. The meetings are taking place between 6 and 27 October 2019.
