April and May in Rome

Today, the Vatican published the list of celebrations in the coming weeks at which the Holy Father will preside:

On Sunday, April 7, the Second Sunday of Easter, also designated as Divine Mercy Sunday, the Holy Father will take posession of his Cathedral.  Although the Bishops of Rome live in Vatican City, Saint Peter's is designated a Basilica, and not the Cathedral of Rome.  That honour belongs to the Basilica of Saint John Lateran.  A long-standing tradition in the Church says that a Bishop may be named to provide pastoral care for a given diocese (only the Pope can assign a bishop to a given diocese), but the bishop in question does not officially take posession of his diocese until he is installed.  Pope Francis began his pastoral ministry as the Bishop of Rome, and will officially take possession of his diocese (Rome) on Sunday.  The liturgy of Seating the Bishop of Rome on the Roman Cathedra (throne) will take place at the Basilica of Saint John Lateran on Sunday afternoon beginning at 5:30pm local time.

On Sunday, April 14, the Third Sunday of Easter, the Holy Father will preside at Mass, celebrated in the Basilica of Saint Paul outside the Walls, beginning at 5:30pm.  In this way, Pope Francis will continue the tradition of his predecessors to visit the major Basilicae of Rome within the initial weeks of their pontificates.  His Holiness visited the Basilica of Saint Mary Major (the other Basilica of Rome) on the day following his election.

On Sunday, April 21, the Fourth Sunday of Easter, Pope Francis will preside at the Ordination of priests for the Diocese of Rome.  This Mass will be celebrated in the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, beginning at 9:30am.

On Sunday, April 28, the Fifth Sunday of Easter, the Pontiff will preside at a Mass which will be celebrated in Saint Peter's Square, beginning at 10:00am.  During that Mass, the Sacrament of Confirmation will also be celebrated.

At 6:00pm on Saturday, May 4, the Holy Father will be at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major for the recitation of the Rosary.

On Sunday, May 5, the Sixth Sunday of Easter, the Successor of Peter will preside at a Mass celebrated in Saint Peter's Square at which members of various Confraternities will be present.  This celebration will begin at 10:00am.

On Sunday, May 12, the Seventh Sunday of Easter, the Holy Father will preside at a Mass celebrated at 9:30am in Saint Peter's Square, during which he will celebrate the Canonization of Blessed Antonio Primaldo and companions; Blessed Laura of Saint Catherine of Siena; and Blessed Maria Guadaloupe Garcia Zavala.

On Saturday, May 18, the Vigil of Pentecost, a special gathering will take place in Saint Peter's Square beginning at 6:00pm, at which various Ecclesiastical Movements will be present.

On Sunday, May 19, the Solemnity of Pentecost, the Pope will preside at a Mass with the representatives of various Ecclesiastical Movements.  The Mass will be celebrated in Saint Peter's Square beginning at 10:00am.
