Vatican meets Mozambique

The Holy Father received the Prime Minister of Mozambique, His Excellency, Alberto Clementino Vaquina in audience this morning in the Vatican Apostolic Palace.  His Excellency also had an opportunity this morning to visit with the Vatican Secretary of State, His Eminence, Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, and with His Excellency, Dominique Mamberti, Vatican Secretary (of State) for Relations with States, after today's meeting with the Holy Father.

During the cordial conversation with the Pope, the Prime Minister presented congratulations to the Holy Father on behalf of the people of Mozambique on the occasion of his recent election to the Pontifical throne.

As the conversation continued, recognition was made of the good relations presently existing between the Holy See and Mozambique, and of the fact that this encounter was an occasion to further strengthen the bilateral agreement between the Holy See and this African nation which was signed on December 7, 2011 and ratified last year.  In particular, the Pope and the President focused on the positive contribution of the Catholic Church to the peace and development of the country, especially through devotion to education, charity and welfare assistance.

Finally, some of the challenges and issues currently facing the continent of Africa were also briefly treated during this encounter.
