Today, the Apostolic Penitentiary issued a decree providing the list of conditions under which a special indulgence will be granted to those who participate in the XXVIII World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro from July 22-29 of this year.
The Apostolic Penitentiary grants the gift of indulgences on the occasion of the World Youth Day which will be celebrated in Rio de Janeiro during the current Year of Faith.
The Holy Father, Pope Francis, wishing that young people, in union with the spiritual goals of the Year of Faith announced by Pope Benedict XVI, might achieve the desired fruits of sanctification by their participation in the XXIII World Youth Day, which will be held from July 22 to 29 of this year in Rio de Janeiro, under the theme of Go and make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19), at the Audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Major Penitentiary on June 3, demonstrating the maternal heart of the Church, from the treasury of satisfactions of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the Saints, granted that young people and all the faithful, properly prepared, may enjoy the gift of indulgences as follows:
1. A plenary indulgence is granted, obtainable once a day under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff) and also applicable to the sufferage of the souls of the faithful departed through the truly repentant and contrite faithful, who will devoutly participate in the sacred rites and religious practices which will be held in Rio de Janeiro.
The faithful who are legitimately impeded, may obtain the Plenary Indulgence if, by complying with the usual spiritual and sacramental conditions and prayer, with the purpose of filial submission to the Roman Pontiff, participate spiritually in the sacred functions on the given days, provided they follow these same rites and pious exercises while they are being carried out, either via television or radio, or through the new means of social communication, all the while with due devotion;
2 A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful, wherever they are during the above-mentioned meeting, every time at least with a contrite spirit, they should raise fervent prayers to God, concluding with the official prayer of the World Youth Day, and with pious invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Brazil, under the title of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida, as well as to other patrons and intercessors of the same gathering that encourage young people to grow stronger in the faith and to lead holy lives.
In order that the faithful may more easily obtain these heavenly gifts, priests legitimately approved to hear sacramental confessions, should with ready and generous hearts lend themselves to receive them and propose to the faithful public prayers for the success of the same World Youth Day.
This Decree is valid for this event. Despite anything to the contrary.
Given in Rome, at the Offices of the Apostolic Penitentiary on June 24 in the Year of our Lord 2013, the Feast of St. John the Baptist.
