A new shepherd for Sault Ste. Marie

On October 29 of this year, His Excellency, Jean-Louis Plouffe celebrated his 75th birthday.  All Bishops are required to submit a letter of resignation from the pastoral governance of the diocese(s) entrusted to their pastoral care on or before the date of their 75th birthday.

As of this morning, the Holy Father, Pope Francis has accepted the resignation from pastoral governance of the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie which was presented by His Excellency, Jean-Louis Plouffe in accordance with the provisions of Canon 401, paragraph 1 of the Code of Canon Law.

The Pope has named the new Bishop of Sault Ste. Marie in the person of His Excellency, Marcel Damphousse, who has until now been serving as the Bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall (Ontario, Canada).

His Excellency, Marcel Damphousse was born on March 19, 1963 in Saint-Joseph (Manitoba).  Following his primary studies, he completed courses in Philosophy at the University College of Saint-Boniface.  In 1988, he was registered at Saint Paul University in Ottawa where he completed his courses in Theology.

He was ordained a priest on June 28, 1991 and incardinated in the Archdiocese of Saint-Boniface (Manitoba).

Following his ordination to priesthood, he exercised pastoral ministry in various parishes as Associate Pastor and from 1994 to 2000 as Pastor of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité in Somerset (Manitoba).  At the same time, he was appointed as President of the Diocesan Commission for Vocations.  In 1996, he was also appointed as Pastor of Saint-Léon.

From 2000 until 2002, he lived in Rome where he completed the requirements for a Licence in Spiritual Theology at the Istituto Teresianum.  Returning to the Diocese of Saint-Boniface, he continued his pastoral ministry, serving for five years (2003-2008) as Diocesan Director of Vocations and Chaplain to Saint Boniface High School.  In 2008, he was named Rector of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint-Boniface and a member of the Diocesan Council for Economic Affairs.

On June 16, 2012, he was appointed as Bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall and was consecrated on September 2 of that same year.

He is currently one of two Counsellors serving as part of the Administration of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario and a member oft the Commission for Education.  He is also serving as Ontario State Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus.
