One of the pioneers of the French community in Elliot Lake is now singing among the angels. We celebrated his funeral earlier today.
It is just and good that we have gathered here this morning to surround Thérèse and her family with our affection and our prayers. In truth, we are all mourning the loss of our beloved Marcel who has now returned to the Father's house.
Since his arrival in Elliot Lake in 1958, Marcel has been involved in the life of this parish community. When they were looking for people to help with the construction of this building, he offered his assistance as leader of the construction team. Later, he took on the responsibility of overseeing the upkeep of the Sisters' convent. This man was always ready to serve others.
Many of us can recall memories of the many hours he devoted to innumerable fundraising efforts, including the hours he spent as part of the team of people who established the Elliot Lake food bank.
People like Marcel are rare these days. At home surrounded by forests and lakes, he rejoiced over these sixty past years. In summer as well as winter, he went hunting and fishing. Everyone who experienced his love for life would say that despite his 85 years, he has died too young, but we are convinced that he will rest in peace in the presence of the Lord (cf Wisdom 4:7) because he has always sought to please the Lord, and God loved him (Wisdom 4:10) just as He loves every one of his children.
Homily for the funeral of Marcel Gauthier
It is just and good that we have gathered here this morning to surround Thérèse and her family with our affection and our prayers. In truth, we are all mourning the loss of our beloved Marcel who has now returned to the Father's house.
Since his arrival in Elliot Lake in 1958, Marcel has been involved in the life of this parish community. When they were looking for people to help with the construction of this building, he offered his assistance as leader of the construction team. Later, he took on the responsibility of overseeing the upkeep of the Sisters' convent. This man was always ready to serve others.
There is no doubt that he meditated upon the words of scripture that we have heard during this morning's celebration, or that this counsel was written in his heart. Hearing the words of the gospel, we can already create an image of Marcel in our minds. Speaking to his disciples about his appearance at the end of time, Jesus explained that he will turn to those who are destined for heaven and say to them: Come ... receive the kingdom prepared for you ... for I was hungry and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty and you give me something to drink (Mt 25:34-35). When Marcel meets the Lord at the doors of our heavenly home, he will hear these words spoken once more, and this time they will be addressed to him, for he was devoted to helping people in need during his many years here on earth.
Many of us can recall memories of the many hours he devoted to innumerable fundraising efforts, including the hours he spent as part of the team of people who established the Elliot Lake food bank.

For many years, Marcel sang the praises of the Lord with the members of the choir in this church. He sang for funerals and he sang at the Midnight Mass. I am convinced that this man was truly filled with the love of God the Father (cf 1 Jn 3:1). He was very well aware that we are all children of God. During his time here on earth, he could not say with certainty what we will see when we arrive in heaven, but now that he has completed his journey, he is discovering what we will be for all eternity; he sees it now as it is (1 Jn 3:2).
And we who still continue our path toward salvation, let us confide ourselves to the mercy of the Lord and to the intercession of our beloved Marcel who is waiting to greet us.
