This morning, at 11:20am local time (in Rome), in the Vatican City State Tribunal, the eighth session of the trial of Giuseppe Profiti and Massimo Spina, accused of embezzling funds from the Bambino Gesù Foundation, took place.
Present today were the accuseds, accompanied by their respective lawyers: Antonelo Blasi (for Giuseppe Profiti) and Alfredo Ottaviani (for Massimo Spina).
The panel of judges included Professor Paolo Papanti-Pelletier, Venerando Morano, and Carlo Bonzano. The Office of the Promotor of Justice was represented by Professor Roberto Zannotti.
Present as a witness was Doctor Mariella Enoc, President of the Bambino Gesù Paediatric Hospital. Today's hearing was dedicated to examination of the witness by the Promotor of Justice, the respective lawyers and the panel of judges.
Professor Roberto Zannotti formalized a three-year prison sentence for Giuseppe Profiti, a perpetual ban against his taking public office and a fine of 5,000 Euros. On the other hand, Massimo Spina's charges were dismissed due to lack of evidence.
The hearing concluded at 2:25pm local time and has now been adjourned until Saturday (14 October 2017) at 9:30am.
