Leaving Lourdes in the Pyrenees, we headed south to the city of Barcelona, famed for its architecture, the 1992 Summer Olympic Games and of course for the Iglesia della Sagrada Famiglia, the church being built for the people, by the people.
Such was the dream of Antoni Gaudi, the famous Spanish architect who designed the Sagrada Famiglia and so many other buildings throughout the city of Barcelona. In fact, for the last few decades of his life, he did nothing but work on one of the facades of the church, and almost a century after his death, the structure is not yet complete, but it won't be long now. Plans are to have the entire project complete in time to celebrate the centenary of his birth into eternity in 2026, but based on the pace of work, it wouldn't be surprising that it's completed before that deadline.
Gaudi designed the sculptures embedded in this wall to tell the story of the Annunciation and birth of Jesus.
Subsequent architects who also worked on the structure created sculptures to depict the trial, passion and death of Jesus.
If you think the craftsmanship on the outside of this masterpiece is spectacular, just wait until you see what's being created on the inside ... but that's the subject of another post.
