With the leaders of the Yazidi community

This morning, the Holy Father received a delegation from the world community of Yazidi.  The delegation was accompanied by the Head of all the Yazidi people, Tahsin Said Ali Beg, and by their supreme spiritual leader, the Baha Sheikh, Skeikh Kato, both of whom live in Iraqi Kurdistan.  There were also three other members of the party, representatives of the Yazidi community from Northern Iraq, from Giorgia and from the diaspora currently living in Germany.

The delegation thanked the Pope - one of them referred to His Holiness as the father of the poor - for his support on behalf of the Yazidi community during this time of persecution and suffering.  The visitors informed the Pope about the current situation being faced by about five thousand Yazidi women who have been enslaved by ISIS, and emphasized the good relationship currently being enjoyed between Yazidis and Christians, including their mutual solidarity.

The Holy Father assured the delegation of his spiritual closeness and his support during this time of trial, as well as his hope for the restoration of justice and the conditions necessary for a free and peaceful life for Yazidis and for all minorities who are currently facing discrimination and violence.

The meeting lasted more than thirty (30) minutes, and took place in the private library at the Apostolic Palace.

There are currently about one million five hundred thousand Yazidis worldwide, about a half million of which reside in Iraq, while others live in Turkey, Georgia, Armenia and in the diaspora throughout many other countries.
