Here is the text of the homily I prepared for the funeral which we celebrated today - for a pioneer of this Northern Ontario town who has now gone to heaven.
Au début de l’existence d’une petite ville au nord de l’Ontario qui est connue sous le nom d’Elliot Lake, notre chère Edna était présente. Avec son mari Urbain, elle a construit son chez-elle dans cet endroit. C’est ici qu’elle a connu la grande joie de voir la naissance de son fils et de ses trois filles, et c’est ici même qu’elle a terminé son séjour terrestre.
Merci, Carmen, d’avoir partagé de beaux souvenirs de ta maman. C’est évident qu’elle était aussi chère pour toi et pour les membres de ta famille qu’elle était pour tout ceux et celles qui faisaient partie et qui font partie de cette communauté chrétienne.
À la lumière des paroles tirées des Saintes Écritures, nous pouvons peut-être mieux comprendre ce moment que nous sommes en train de vivre. Edna nous a quittés la nuit du 26 au 27 avril derniers. Avant cela, elle partageait avec nous le chemin qui mène vers notre but ultime: la vie en plénitude dans la demeure du Seigneur au ciel. Certes, elle a connu beaucoup de joie, mais il y a eu également des épreuves pour elle. Même si elle a dû souffrir, ces souffrances étaient peu de choses auprès du bonheur dont elle sera comblée (Sagesse 2,5) dans la maison du Seigneur.
Bien qu’elle ne pouvait pas envisager et comprendre l’ampleur de cette réalité pendant son séjour parmi nous, sa foi était bien enracinée et nourrie de la parole de Dieu qu’elle avait écoutée de semaine en semaine ici même, dans cet édifice. Combien souvent s’est-elle mise aux genoux pour parler avec le Seigneur, pour demander à notre mère du ciel de prier avec elle et de guider ses pas? Ayant été séparé de son bien-aimé Urbain et de bien d’autres qui lui étaient chères, elle a sans doute mieux compris les paroles de Saint Paul: le corps qui est notre demeure sur la terre doit être détruit, mais Dieu construit pour nous dans les cieux une demeure éternelle qui n’est pas l’oeuvre des hommes (2 Corinthiens 5,1).
Voici la clé pour comprendre la vie de tous ceux qui croient vraiment en la Bonne Nouvelle que Jésus est venu proclamer. Si nous cherchons chaque jour à vivre à la lumière de l’évangile, il faut d’abord chercher le visage du Seigneur qui se fait connaître à travers les assoiffés, les étrangers, les malades, les personnes en prison et tous ceux et celles qui se trouvent en besoin (cf Mt 25,35-36). C’est exactement ce qu’Edna a fait pendant son séjour parmi nous.
Maintenant qu’elle se trouve devant le Seigneur, il l’accueille en le disant: Viens, bénie de mon Père, reçois en héritage le royaume préparé pour toi depuis la création du monde (Mt 25,24). Quel bel exemple elle nous a donné! Quel héritage de foi elle nous a confié! Nous savons que bientôt nous allons retourner chacun à notre routine quotidienne, mais n’oublions jamais la sagesse dont notre chère Edna a témoigné pendant sa vie. Ainsi, ses efforts continueront à porter du fruit là où nous nous trouverons jusqu’à ce que nous la voyons de nouveau dans la demeure de notre Père céleste.
At the time when a certain small town in Northern Ontario was only just beginning to be settled, our beloved Edna arrived. With her husband Urbain, she created her home in this place. Here, she experienced the insurmountable joy of witnessing the birth of her son and of her three daughters, and here she completed her earthly journey.
Carmen, thank you for sharing such wonderful memories of your mother. It is evident that you and your siblings loved her very much; she was also just as cherished by those who have been part of - and those who are still part of - this parish community.
In the light of the gospel passage we have just read, we can perhaps grasp a better understanding of this very moment that we are living. Edna left us during the night between the 26th and 27th of April of this year. Before that, she had shared the road that we are all travelling toward our final destiny: life in all its fullness in heaven with the Lord. Surely, she had many moments of joy but there were also trials in her life. Even if she had to suffer, her sufferings were minor in comparison with the glory with which she has now been filled (Wisdom 2:5) in the Lord's house.
Even though she could not imagine or fully understand the extent of this glory during her earthly life, her faith was firmly rooted and fed by the word of God that she heard week after week here in this place. How often did she fall on her knees to speak with the Lord, to ask our heavenly mother to pray with her and to guide her steps? Having been separated from her beloved Urbain and from many others who were dear to her, she was all the better able to understand the meaning of Saint Paul's words: this body that we inhabit on earth must be destroyed, but God is building an eternal home for us in heaven which is not the work of human hands (2 Corinthians 5:1).
This is the key to understanding the life of all those who truly believe in the Good News that Jesus came to preach. If we want to live by the light of the gospel, we must seek out the face of the Lord in those who are thirsty, those who are strangers, those who are sick, those who are in prison and all those who are in need (cf Mt 25:35-36). This is exactly what Edna sought to accomplish during her earthly life.
Now that she stands before the Lord, Jesus is welcoming her, saying: Come, you blessed of my Father, receive the kingdom that has been prepared for you from the beginning of time (Mt 25:24). What a wonderful example she has provided for us! What a fervent testament of faith she has passed on to us! Very soon, we will all return to our own daily routines, but let us never forget the wisdom that our beloved Edna has shared with us. In this way, her efforts will continually bear fruit wherever we are ... until the day when we see her again in the Father's house.
