New Auxiliary Bishop for Alexandria-Cornwall

This morning, the Holy Father, Pope Francis has appointed Father Guy Desrochers, C.Ss.R., currently serving as Spiritual Advisor at the Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and Preacher of Religious Retreats in Canada and the United States of America as Auxiliary Bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall, which is currently united in persona episcopis to the Archdiocese of Ottawa.  His Holiness has assigned the titular See of Melzi to the newly-appointed Bishop.

Reverend Father Guy Desrochers was born on 23 May 1956 in Hull, Québec, in the territory of the current Archdiocese of Gatineau.  He completed secondary studies at Collège Saint-Alexandre, administered by the Fathers of the Holy Spirit in Limbour and then obtained a specialization in Fine Arts and Commercial Arts at Algonquin College in Ottawa.  From 1972 to 1979, he worked as a caricaturist at Ottawa's Le Droit newspaper.

In August 1983, he entered the noviciate of the Redemptorist Fathers at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré.  He took first vows on 7 August 1984 and perpetual vows on 29 August 1987.

From 1982 to 1983 he studied Philosophy at Saint-Agustin Seminary in Cap-Rouge (Québec) and then Theology at Laval University from 1984 to 1989 where he earned a Baccalaureate.  He then served for two years within the Archdiocese of Montréal before being Ordained a priest in Hull, as part of the Redemptorist Province of Saint-Anne-de-Beaupré on 7 January 1989.

From 1989 to 1995, he was responsible for a small missionary team composed of four Redemptorists in the Diocese of Gaspé.  From 1995 to 1998, he was Superior at Aylmer, in the Diocese of Gatineau-Hull.  From 1998 to 2005, he exercised his ministry at the Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and as Treasurer of the local Redemporist community.

From 2005 until 2008, he served as Superior of the Saint-Redempteur Pavillion in Saint-Augustin-des-Desmaures, a host home for retreats undertaken by ecclesial groups.  From 2008 to 2011, he was Director of the Sainte-Anne newsletter and animator at the Shrine.  From 2011 until 2015, he was Rector of the Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and Superior of the International Community that provides spiritual service at the Shrine.  Since 2015, he has been part of the ministry team at the Shrine and serving as Preacher of retreats in Canada and in the United States of America.
